Description
‘Variegated String of Pearls’
Variegated String of Pearls is a classic wishlist item for succulent lovers. With pea-like pearls swirled in cream, this elegantly trailing succulent is a totally unique addition to collections. Each luscious green and milky white pearl has its own translucent “window” adding an extra touch of intrigue. And, with the right combination of sun stress and water, you may even see your variegated pearls blushing with hints of pink or purple. Variegated String of Pearls is slower growing in comparison to its non-variegated counterpart, due to lacking some of the chlorophyll that completely green leaves possess.

Care Tips
LIGHT: Indirect light, shade, or early morning sun. Variegates are more sensitive to direct sun as the variegated parts lack the chlorophyll to process it. This makes them sunburn easily.
WATER: Variegated String of Pearls, like all succulents, don’t like to be waterlogged but this species can take more water than most. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between watering during the warm growing season. Water once every two or three weeks during dormancy.
SOIL: Use a well-draining soil mix.
PLANTING: String of Pearls does best in places where its strings are able to hang or form ground cover. Baskets are perfect for letting the impressive strings hang where they can grow to over 50 cm long. Give this plant space to grow with a 20–25 cm pot with drainage holes. Garden walls and rockeries also allow this plant to spread and thrive.
FERTILISER: Use a general fertiliser twice a year to enhance new growth and the plant’s overall health. Over fertilising causes malformed growth.
BLOOMING: Blooms from autumn to winter and especially from May to June. The flowers are dainty and white, and form tightly compacted puffballs. Each bloom has a halo of deep red to golden yellow filaments.
DORMANCY: Variegated String of Pearls doesn’t go into full dormancy, but growth slows during winter months.
PROPAGATION: String of Pearls propagates via clippings. Allow the cut end to callous over and insert into dirt during warm months. Roots sprout from the leaf nodes.
